It doesn’t actually matter whether you want to make cotton candy privately or for sale, the machinery is going to work in the same fashion.
The difference is when you wish to retail the cotton candy you are going to need something a lot quicker and more robust.

You couldn’t have a queue of people standing about waiting for their portion of cotton candy, they want it now, not tomorrow!

Buying a cotton candy machine to create yourself a little business could be a great idea because most people, young or old, like the old fashioned candy treat just as much as they ever did.

Think of all the occasions where you could set up your equipment and start producing cotton candy, or if you are British – candy floss. There are so many venues where this would be possible.

Any kind of occasion or function, indoors or outdoors, is suitable. Wherever there are people gathered you have ready made clientele.

Football games, baseball games, public parks, shopping malls, birthday or anniversary get-togethers, picnics. As I said, any place where people are going to gather you should be able to sell your product and make great use of your cotton candy machine for profit.

Private parties or barbecues are ideal for this sort of enterprize. I am certain that if your friends and neighbors knew you were able to provide this sugar treat you would be in demand. It would set their party or family get-together apart from the usual gathering.

Think of all the children’s birthday parties where you would be an instant hit with your candy treat. You would have a queue round the block!

If you do intend to turn this cotton candy production into a money making project then you should consider buying more of a commercial style machine because as I said before, speed is of the essence when you have people waiting.

A private party is different, family wouldn’t mind waiting for their treat, but if you are actually selling it, people expect quick and efficient production.

The supplies are really quite reasonable and easy to get hold of. For best results it is always best to buy the floss sugar with the flavoring already included.

You may have in your mind that there is only one flavor to be had with cotton candy, but you would be wrong. Most suppliers will have around 14 different flavors to choose from such as boo-blue, silly nilly, spookie fruiti, leapin lime, O-jay, jolly berry, cherry berry, pina colada, bubble gum, wacky watermelon, banana bonanza, sassy apple, sizzlin lemon-sour and razzleberry-sour and I am just quoting from one supplier.

Possibly most suppliers will have many of these flavors in common but you could well find something different from another supplier.

You can put your product in hand-held cotton candy cones, or you could wrap the strands round a stick, or you could even put the product into a stay-fresh container if the person doesn’t want to eat it there and then.

With this kind of stay-fresh container you could easily have quite a number prepared for when you set up your stand. The customers would have a choice to wait for a freshly prepared portion or if they are in a hurry to get at their treat, they could have one of the containers already made.

To bring back the asmosphere of the carnival there is nothing like the nostalgic taste of cotton candy. You are going to have memories flooding back of all the fun of the fair.

If you are looking for a bargain with a kids cotton candy machine always check out the popular auction sites, I am sure you will find something there.

However, there are so many sites devoted to these machines that you will have plenty to look at.

Usually with the kids versions of these machines you will get enough supplies to produce 48 cotton candy cones, which are disposable, 16 oz. each of blue raspberry and pink vanilla flossing sugar.

You need to take into consideration that mostly these machines are made from plastic and therefore are not going to be as robust as other home machines. Do not expect them to be able to perform the same as a grownup version.

They all seem to score well with reviewers as to their fun and educational abilities, but unfortunately durability does not score that highly.

There are some other brands of a kids cotton candy machine that are more expensive they certainly look it, they look more substantial and I believe they perform a lot better. They actually look like a scaled down version of a proper cotton candy cart such as you would see at a fair or ball game.

They would enhance any kitchen and not look at all out of place.

Although these machines are designated as ‘kids’ always remember that there is heat involved, this is necessary to melt the sugar in order to be able to spin it. Loading the machine is another area where there could be accidents, your child might forget that it has to be filled when the machine is not turned on. If sugar is introduced while the machine is spinning, then you will have sugar also spinning, all over the place.

Not only can this be messy as the sugar particles soon turn sticky, some of these particles could fly into the child’s eyes. They should always be advised to wear glass/goggles when using the machine and there should be adult supervision, I think that is very desirable to make sure that no accidents happen.

Why wait for the fair to come to town, you can have that taste whenever you want it. Mind you I am not advocating that children should be allowed to eat this confection all day and every day. Some curb should be put on their appetite for sweet treats.

1 oz. of sugar will contain between 105 and 115 calories and apart from that you have their teeth to consider. You must be able to govern just how much the kids cotton candy machine is in use.

Of course there is always the possibility they may grow tired of it when it is constantly on tap – NOT. I don’t know of any child, or adult for that matter, who doesn’t like cotton candy. It is not one of those things that you do tire of.

There are numerous ideas given out online as to how you can make a DIY version of a cheap cotton candy machine one being by using a wire whisk and trailing the melted sugar across two wooden spoons and letting it solidify again in the air.

Firstly I would say that this is spun sugar, it is not cotton candy. You need lots of air into the molten sugar to make the cloud effect and speed, neither of which you are going to get just using a whisk.

The resulting strands are very nice and are used in a lot of dessert recipes, they can look quite effective if you make a basket shape by draping the strands over an upturned bowl to harden and then fill it with fruit, or icecream etc. but it is NOT cotton candy.

Way, way back in history they first did this sort of thing using a fork dipped in the liquid sugar and creating those strands and letting them harden in the air, but that does not resemble the airy fluffy sugar treat we know today.

There actually are cheap cotton candy machine deals on the internet where you can buy one and they really are quite inexpensive. There are even kids versions, but I wouldn’t think they would be too strong.

You could search the popular auction sites and I have no doubt you would find a good buy there.

Another idea would be to find a cheap rental deal and there are many of those available too.

If you don’t think you would be making cotton candy that regularly the rental idea would probably suit your purposes best. On the other hand, if you have young children in the family I think buying a machine could prove to be quite economic.

It doesn’t take much to make a serving of cotton candy, 1 oz. of sugar, and if you buy the proper floss sugar it already has flavoring and coloring added so no need to buy flavoring extra.

You can use the ordinary granulated sugar you would already have in your kitchen cupboard but in that case you would need something to flavor it, either the concentrate sold by the machine suppliers or some other kind of syrup. You can buy all sorts of flavored syrups in the supermarket so you could experiment with those.

The question of speed is not only for speeding up output but I believe that you get more volume to each ounce of sugar you use.

There are some newer style commercial machines that use a tubular heating element instead of heat ribbons. This type of machine is usually much more efficient, is easier to clean and is not going to clog up as much as the machines still using the heat ribbons.

Some of these machines are capable of producing 200 servings per hour. This has to be excellent news if you are going to be using your cotton candy machine for business purposes, or even if you are just using it at a fundraising event etc.

If you were to use one of these super speedy machines by getting more candy cotton per ounce you would in fact have yourself a cheap cotton candy machine.

In the US you can get a cotton candy machine rental from $50 – $75 a day.

One machine from Hullabaloo Party Rental have an Econofloss machine that can turn out 4 x 1oz. servings every minute and more than 100 oz. of cotton candy per hour. You are supplied with a safety bubble to fit over the top of the bowl.

To get started you will need Cotton Candy Sugar, Cones and Bags. The bags would only be needed if you were working at a party and a bag was going to be sent home with each child as a party favor.

Obviously you will need to clean the machine before it is returned, but if you don’t want to do that you can pay $20 for cleaning and return the machine as it is – uncleaned.

Some companies charge for example Monday through Thursday at $110 per day, Friday, Saturday and Sunday plus holidays at $130 a day with additional machines and carts at $110.00. These prices are for a proper cart on wheels.

A table top version for the same period as above, at $70, $80 and $70.

Another supplier will rent you a machine for $70 a day and include half a gallon carton of pink vanilla or blue bubblegum sugar along with paper cones and a sugar scoop.

A half gallon will give you over 60 servings and you can get additional packs for only $10.

Costs are very good considering the amount of money you stand to make if you are going to do this as a money making exercise.

If you set up at a fair you expect profits in excess of 75-85%. I think you would agree that this would be good going. I have seen a figure of expected earnings of $1000 a day!

The first recorded commercial use of a cotton candy machine was at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Since then of course it has become a firm favorite with children and adults alike.

It is quite a strange phenomenon watching the strands appear. This sweet treat is just sugar and 98% air plus any flavorings naturally.

You would very quickly get the hang of producing a well wrapped stick of cotton candy [or cone]. You will be producing professional looking servings in no time at all.

Whether you are going for a cotton candy machine rental for private or commercial use I am sure you will more than get your money’s worth.

Do you have a special occasion coming up? Are you throwing a children’s party soon? Are you having a family get together or something like that? You might want to consider cotton candy machine rentals as being something to give your party something different.

There are machines that can turn out a very speedy 4 x 1oz. servings PER MINUTE, yes, per minute and that equates to over 100oz. of cotton candy produced per hour.

That’s quite an efficient machine and it’s called the Econofloss from Hullabaloo Party Rentals. Turning out that sort of volume you could even use this sort of rental to go into the business of selling cotton candy at other places. They will even clean the machine for an extra $20 if you didn’t want to be bothered.

Maybe you could provide for other people’s functions or you could go to picnics, sports events in your neighborhood, even perhaps someone else’s garage sales. In fact anywhere where people are gathering is a potential sales pitch.

All you need to set yourself up is of course the machine, then a table, slightly lower than you would normally think of because this would save you having to have your arm lifted high over the side of the bowl all the time. It would definitely be easier to operate in this manner.

You would need an electrical outlet somewhere within 50 feet of where you are setting up the machine.

You would then need your supplies, the cotton candy sugar, cones to gather up the sugary strangs and perhaps bags if you want to bag some of the candy cotton. Perhaps to use as party favors. If you elected to use ordinary granulated sugar you would need to purchase flavoring, but floss sugar is already flavored.

Have you considered cotton candy machine rentals as a way of getting money for some fundraising you are connected with. Perhaps you have a favorite charity or your local Church needs something renewed. You could quite quickly raise a substantial amount of money selling cotton candy.

Amounts like $1000 a day are not unrealistic. Imagine if you could make that sort of money to hand over to a charity.

Some rental companies will give the cotton candy rental free if you rent some inflatable item, say a bouncy castle, you know, that sort of thing. This could be a good bargain if you were throwing an out of doors party. Another company may let you have the cotton candy for 50% off.

Whatever the deal, sometimes you can save money.

You might think that a home cotton candy machine would not work as well as the commercial size machines, but they do.

Just add the sugar and away you go. Soon you are collecting all the sugary strands onto your stick or cone and in a very short time you have a bundle of that sticky sugary treat that the kids adore.

If you were to have one of these machines on hand when you next gave a children’s party it would be the social event of the season I am sure. Kids love something a bit different and this would allow you to have this.

You could even send each child away with a bag of cotton candy as a party favor.

You can either use cotton candy sugar which is already flavored or use regular granulated sugar to which you must add the flavor concentrate.

Everything about it is inexpensive because these home machines are extremely affordable and the supplies are cheap as well.

I have just been on the inventorspot.com site and seen a home cotton candy machine that can produce cotton candy from any sort of hard candy.

The machine is Japanese made and although the cost is higher than most normal home machines it does have an advantage in that you can use any hard candy you happen to have about the house. You will get the flavor you want and you don’t have to buy special supplies.

You could prepare cotton candy at the drop of a hat using anything you had in the house in the way of hard candy. Use your chop sticks to collect the strands.

some of the home candy machines are so cute they look like miniatures of regular carts that you would see at fairs and any open air event.

I think quite possibly that soon no kitchen will be without its own machine so that you can produce cotton candy any time it is requested.

You must watch the calories though. An average serving of cotton candy is usually 1 oz. of sugar and this can contain anywhere from 105 to 115 calories, so just be aware.

Many of the models are aimed at children, at their being able to operate the machine on their own, but I would not advise allowing this unsupervised. After all you know that there is heat involved to melt the sugar. Accidents could happen so it would always be best to have an adult present when a child is operating a machine.

As far back as the 13th century Venice was importing sugar from India.

By the time the 15th century came around, Italian aristocrats were decorating their dinner tables with sugar sculptures.

Spun sugar [as in cotton candy] was made by the simple expedient of dipping a fork in and out of melted sugar and then allowing the sugary threads to solidify in the air. The strands being draped over an upturned bowl while they dried.

Other European countries quickly adopted this craze for making spun sugar in their homes and most often this colored spun sugar was used as a decoration.

They spun gold or silver colored sugar into very intricate decorative webs for Easter.

This spun sugar was of necessity only enjoyed by the wealthy. It was always made by hand all those hundreds of years ago and took quite a lot of time to do. Plus the poorer class of people not only couldn’t afford the sugar they just didn’t have the time to stand around spinning sugar into strands.

Americans were not to be able to enjoy this sugar treat until much later. By the year 1897 two American men William Morrison and John Wharton produced the first machine to make this sugar confection.

The method by today’s standards would seem quite pathetic, but it was the first machine to produce the sugar treat mechanically instead of by hand.

Spun sugar candy was introduced in 1900 at the Paris Exposition. Then the Americans were given their first sight of this fairy floss, as it was then named, at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.

People seemed more than willing to pay 25c for a box of this sweet treat, the same amount of money charged for entrance to the World’s Fair. It earned the candy makers a handsome $17,000 from the sale of more than 68,500 boxes.

The name of Fairy Floss was not changed to Cotton Candy until the 1920’s and the name is still used today.

Over the years newer machine designs and much improved models have been produced. By the 1970’s confection makers brought out a new and very much improved machine that was capable of commercial production.

At one time you only got cotton candy in either pink or blue but now you have a rainbow of colors available and the number of different flavors is unbelievable.

You don’t need to wait until there is a fair or such anymore you can produce this confection in your own home with the assistance of very moderately priced machines.
